Learning to Read Cards: How to Start Right

From your first card to the Grand Tableau – the learning path with which Britta Kienle has guided thousands of students to confident interpretation.

Can you really learn card reading?

Yes – and systematically at that. Britta Kienle has been teaching people to read cards for over 60 years; her compact course has been translated into seven languages, and thousands of students have started out with her method. Her most important message to beginners: card reading is not secret knowledge for the chosen few. It is a craft made of 36 meanings, clear rules and plenty of practice – plus the willingness to look honestly. "If you want to learn card reading, be honest with yourself and with your clients."

Step 1: Get to know the 36 cards

Everything begins with the basic meanings. Don't take on all the cards at once – three to five per day is enough. For each card, you'll find its own page in the Lenormand lexicon with Britta's interpretation: general meaning, love, career, health and the card as a timing card. Start with the friendly ones – Heart, Clover, Sun – and work your way towards the more serious ones like the Clouds, Mountain and Coffin.

Step 2: One card of the day, every day

The card of the day is Britta's favourite exercise for the beginning: one card in the morning, a brief look back in the evening. That way, the meanings connect with your real life instead of remaining vocabulary. Keep it up for a month, and the most important cards will stick all by themselves.

Step 3: Combine cards

The real art begins when two cards lie side by side: the Rider alone brings a message – next to the Heart, it becomes a message of love; next to the Coffin, a message that first makes you pause. How to do this systematically is shown on the page Interpreting Lenormand combinations with examples from Britta's textbooks.

Step 4: Small spreads, then the Grand Tableau

Only once meanings and combinations are secure do spreads come in: the three-card spread for a clear question, the advice line, later the Grand Tableau with all 36 cards. Britta's textbooks build up in exactly this order – from the basic course (Lehrbuch I) through the advanced courses to the master class. In the online training, you practise the same steps interactively with over 1,000 interpretation exercises.

How long does it take to learn card reading?

With a small daily practice: the basic meanings are secure after about four to six weeks, confident combinations after three to six months. The Grand Tableau is a journey of years – but even the three-card spread gives you astonishingly clear answers after just a few weeks. What matters is not talent, but regularity.
